Sam Jones 🎓

What's a big move that has shaped you?

Deciding to leave South Africa for America, with hardly any money in my bank account, on Christmas day in 2010. I have somehow survived here for almost a decade as a student my whole time in this crazy country.

Dream job?

To be making film title sequences.

Who is your favorite GD faculty member?

I don't like to pick favorites. Maybe Michael if he didn't support Manchester City :)

Name an important lesson you've learned so far in your academic career.

Writing can help a lot to formulate your idea.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

When I get in the flow while working on a project and can't stop working on it because new ideas keep coming up

How have current (big) circumstances affected your perspective on design?

Respond to a disaster by making things in reaction to it.

What's your signature design move?

To put something in motion after designing it.

Noticing Nature

Noticing Nature aims to tell a new story that is more centered around nature. It explores how everything, including ourselves, is connected, and how important it is that we take the time to slow down and notice the nature that surrounds us every day.

Think Beautiful Ideas for a Sustainable World

Poster and social media animation for Terry Irwin lecture. Inspired by Fritjof Capra’s book Web of Life, our goal was to show how everything in nature is connected and works as a system. The words and letters in the ground are absorbed by the plant’s roots. They travel through the stem and then leave the plant as seeds which are picked up by insects and fed back into the ground. The cycle then repeats itself.

Bijan Berahimi Lecture

Poster and social media graphics made for visiting artist lecture series at CalArts featuring Bijan Berahimi. We wanted to achieve two main things with the graphics… to show Bijan’s fun, positive personality, and to illustrate the importance process plays in his design making.
